A Beginners Guide to Home Projects

The process of building or renovating a home can be a fulfilling experience if you have the right outlook and steps to successfully create the image you have in mind. With a few tips and tricks, your dream home can be achieved.

  1. Realistic Measurement: At the beginning of your renovation process, you are going to be excited about the outcome of your future space. With the amount of ideas and notions running through your mind, you need to remain realistic. Look at the area you have to work with and make a list of the must-haves you want. Once you have a list created, an efficient project is to cut out paper in the size and shapes of each item you are buying or keeping. As you move each piece of paper around your space, you can see firsthand how furniture, tables and open areas would fit into and fill the redone area. You could also do this for walls if you are considering replacement windows, paintings or mirrors.

  2. Organization: Whether it is the person you will be working with, your time frame, maintenance or what your space is going to look like, you must be organized. Keep a folder with tabs for each category of your renovation. This way you can keep all receipts organized for potential reference, for your taxes, as well as any to-do lists. There are also apps out there to keep your thoughts organized, such as Homezada or Adornably. Yes, there’s an app for that.

  3. Cleanliness: Keep the mess of renovation to a minimum by always staying on top of cleaning. Buy wall cleaners, floor covers or any extra paint you may need for touch ups along the way. While doing your renovation, focus on cleaning replacement windows, doors and cover furniture to keep your room looking brand new. At the completion of your project, you will be happy with a clean space that has been maintained during the entire process. Instead of mopping and dusting, you will be relaxing in your new space right away.

  4. Budget: Your budget is the most important aspect of renovation. To stay on the right path, research constantly to uncover the best deals. Although you want to save money, you must research, read reviews or get a reference from a friend you trust to make sure the deal is worth the cash in your pocket. It would be tough to spend the entirety of your budget on a job that isn’t done well. Your money plan also comes into play when you are deciding on large purchases. Items like replacement windows could cost more on the front end. You may have to pick and decide between two large items, or sacrifice multiple smaller details. Each move you make is important; the pieces you choose will make a statement in your space for years to come. Whatever your budget is, you must be prepared for a thorough decision making process.
